Videography at your Wedding

When it comes to your special day, you want to capture every moment and what better way to have these moments forever on film. I asked the lovely Rachel from Veiled Productions to share some top tips.

5 questions to ask your wedding videographer before you book them

1) Do you film the day on your own?

Some videographers shoot solo whilst others have an assistant or a second videographer on the day as well. Understanding how they work will mean you can discuss what will work best for you on the day. If you’re having all the celebrations in one place then one videographer is likely to be enough although a second videographer is great for filming parts of the day you might not see. For instance, whilst you are having photos just the two of you a second videographer can film your guests at the reception.

If you’re getting ready offsite, having a religious ceremony or the reception elsewhere then it’s likely two videographers will be the best option.

2) Will I receive the ceremony, speeches and first dance in full?

This may sound like an odd question to ask but not all videographers include the full footage of the formalities. I’ve heard people have assumed they will receive them and it turns out they aren’t included in the package they have booked.

In 5 years when the words of the speeches have been forgotten you will definitely appreciate being able to listen to them back and see your guests’ reactions.

3) What safety precautions do you have in place to prevent footage getting lost?

Such an important question because you’d hate for the footage to get damaged or be lost during a technical problem. It’s so precious. Most videographers will back up the footage in multiple locations just in case one hard drive gets corrupted or something.

I back up the footage onto a hard drive where I will edit the films, a separate hard drive off-site and onto a system which can copy the footage onto another hard drive should one fail. With this system in place I’ve never lost any footage.

4) How long does it take you to edit the films?

This will vary greatly depending on the videographer you choose so definitely ask the question to avoid disappointment. I say up to 10 weeks. This gives me plenty of time to edit the films. I hate rushing the process and during the summer a backlog of edits can build up during the busy season. I never outsource the editing work either, it will always be me creating the story and editing the clips to the music.

5) Will our edited films be added to your website or showcased on social media?

In this modern world most videographers will stipulate in their contract that the films will be used for promotional purposes.

Usually this means on their website and on social media. If this is a concern for you then definitely ask the question and check the contract carefully. Most videographers will be happy to discuss any concerns you have. As a bride to be myself I’m very excited to see our wedding film online and be able to share it with our family and friends.
